  • Here's a couple old posts, maybe something will help in your plans:
Yellowstone and the Wyoming Area ...... and ...... Ditto

For the Tetons: We stayed at Colter Bay Campground, the one without hook-ups in mid-June 2010, it was a nice place for such a large campground and close to showers. Our daughter & her hubby needed them, not having showers in their A-Liner. I have heard good things about Gros Ventre Campground...get more animals walking by or close by, etc. Nice views.

If there again, I believe I'd try Gros Ventre.

The Colter Bay Visitor Center and Indian ArtsMuseum by the Colter Bay Campground is really a neat one.

If your Route takes you near Raton Area of New Mexico. Between Clayton & Raton is the Capulin Volcano Nat'l Mon't.
A Neat Place. ------ But no Camping

Near Clayton, Clayton Lake State Park. Never been to it, however.

Sugarite Canyon State Park by Raton is a neat area.

Near Amarillo: Never been to the state park, but have read about it & would like to make it over there someday. Palo Duro Canyon State Park as well as Caprock Canyons State Park, from what I have read, seem like very neat areas to see.

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway would make a neat place to check out. One I would like to see. For perhaps a neat experience, Copper Breaks State Park near Quanah sounds pretty cool.

More overnighting along US 287 between Dallas/Fort Worth Area to Amarillo.

If going via Dumas, Dumas City Park north of Amarillo. Or the Amarillo Welcome Center

From Amarillo, I believe I would take US 87 to Dumas to Dalhart to Clayton to Raton & I-25 N to Cheyenne. From Cheyenne, I'd stay on I-25 N to Casper. Then US 26 W to Moran (Tetons).

    Colorado Springs Area

If you do make it to Cody, try to see the Buffalo Bill Historical Center with Five Museums Under One Roof. http://www.bbhc.org/

    These 4 were really great:
    Buffalo Bill Museum
    Whitney Gallery of Western Art
    Plains Indian Museum
    Cody Firearms Museum

The Cody Chamber of Commerce has a nice Visitor Center (full of information) & with a really nice art gallery.

  • Take care on 287 going into Lander, lots of frost heaves. Go SLOW. I take 191 out of Rock Springs. Lot's better road.
  • However you would normally get to Dallas from Houston, then take 287 out of Fort worth to Amarillo, then over to Raton Pass to I 25. This is the way we usually go. Then to Laramie and you be on I 80 . Exit at Rawlins to lander, Wy then to Tetons/Yellowstone. We've traveled this route many times pulling 34 ft 5 er.
  • Been to Yellowstone several times and a number of different ways. Routing depends on how long you have to get there, whether you like IH driving and if you are going to sightsee while traveling to Yellowstone. With that information, I think that you will get some good suggestions.
  • P.S. Stupid me!!! Also looking for route info if anyone has travelled there. Thanks.
  • For Yellowstone and Grand Teton - they both have non-reservable campgrounds you could fit into. We've never made reservations for those parks. However, we park the previous night nearby so we can get there early morning - or before noon at least.

Tetons: Colter Bay campground has 300 non-reservable sites. There's a concessionier campground right next door called Colter Bay RV and for that you'd need reservations. That's the best place to stay if you need hookups. Also in the Tetons a little further south in the park and closer to the town of Jackson is Gros Ventre campground - also 300 sites and no reservations. This is our favorite.

Yellowstone: Here's a good site for all of your choices and reservable or not...

    Yellowstone Campgrounds

If you want full hookups in Yellowstone Fishing Bridge is your answer:

    Fishing Bridge Campground

Here's another good site for Yellowstone and the various entrance roads:

    Yellowstone Roads

For Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park - Glacier Basin Campground in the park is very nice as is Moraine campground. The beetles have damaged many areas of trees in the park so it will not look the same as when we volunteered there. There has been massive tree removals but perhaps it just opened up the area so that you see more of the mountains. Neither has hookups. Outside the park in Estes Park are quite a few campgrounds but haven't stayed there.

    Have a great trip!
  • It has always been my preference to NOT make reservations since that pretty much puts you on a fixed schedule. Just stop where we find for overnighters. Reservations may be a good idea for MORE than an overnight stop (like in or near the parks you're visiting).
    Good luck / Skip
