How old are your maps? The new Arco Norte around Mexico City will not show on older maps. New roads are being built every year and map makers are behind. If you have a PC (not Apple) you can download Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013 from Amazon for $20 to see some fairly recent maps - which show Arco Norte. That is what Turtle Toad outlined in his post. Arco Norte has its own website showing the route and the tolls. But you do not say where you want to go on the Gulf? From Puebla you can take 150 and head toward Vera Cruz or the Yucatan. Or you can split off the Arco Norte to head up toward Poza - I heard there is a good new road that way but have not taken it. If you want good maps you need to get off the paper and get digital - much more detailed and up to date.
I heard the new(from Arco Norte) autopista to Poza Rica is an amazing fast drive, from there HWY 180 south to Veracruz city and beyond.
