As someone said, the longest journey is just one step at a time. So it really depends on having sufficient time to make the trip without “endurance” driving. I decide where I want to end up and use the net, printed literature and other resources to see what’s of interest in that direction. Then I use MS Streets and Trips to lay out a route. I’m a thorough planner, but when I leave I often don’t follow the plan and I may wind up in a totally different direction. I just like to plan.:)
I think a lot depends on the RV you have, where you’re traveling, and how comfortable you are not having a reserved place to spend the night. 95% of my travel is in the west with a lot of national forest and public land and I have a small 16’ TT that I predominately dry camp in. So I can just wander without regard as to where I’ll stop or spend the night. I can count on my fingers the times I’ve made a reservation in 50 years and I only do that if I’m near a city. And that’s a rare event in itself. I’m rarely on a freeway; I take the secondary roads because I think they’re far more interesting to travel on.
Big RV’s and areas of the country without much public land don’t lend themselves well to that sort of impromptu traveling and in those conditions you might need to plan your stops more and make reservations. There’s always parking lots, something I don’t like and have never needed to do. But I’ve seen many RV’s in them. Predominately MH’s, but also some big FW’s and a few TT’s. And I once saw a PU in one.
If you have the opportunity to do it now I wouldn’t put it off. My thought would be to just wing it and go wherever the mood strikes you without a firm destination in mind. I think that would be a more interesting and relaxing trip.
