how is hwy 58 Martinsville, VA to I77

I am traveling to Martinsville, VA to a NASCAR race. I will be approaching from the south. That shouldn't be a problem.
My concern is continuing on north.

How is Hwy 58 from Martinsville to I-77?
  • 58 is not the best road but you should be fine. I77 traffic is getting heavier all the time but is usually fine. The worst part of I77 is MM 1 (NC line) to about 10 can be foggy with lots of accidents (about a 95 car pile up a few months back) but RT 58 comes out at MM 14 Hillsville Exit.

Good Luck & enjoy the race....................
  • Why north? Home is Cincinnati area.

Will be driving a 37' diesel pusher towing a Fiesta.

Hwy 58 to I-77 gets me home in a day.
  • Rt 58 is just Ok...... going over Lovers Leap is steep. Just OK if you have plenty of tow vehicle, ok after Lovers Leap 58 is getting better they are trying to 4 lane the whole thing but, not all yet just a couple sections (Meadows of Dan & Hillsville). Only steep switchbacks are for about 5 miles. I live near there so pull trailers over it all the time but keep in mind it is a 2 lane road & easy to get behind a slow log truck or a local that is in no hurry.......... Personally 220 north is a much better road (but not great).

Currently Martinsville through Stuart is nice flat 4 lane (Patrick Springs can be a speed trap)....Stuart to Vesta (Lovers Leap area very steep & curvy) Vesta to meadows of Dan ok .....Meadows of Dan by pass 4 lane nice, Meadows of Dan through Laurel Fork working on 4 lane (currently 2 lane), Laurel Fork to east of Hillsville still 2 lane East of Hillsville to I77 nice 4 lane..........

I81 north is heavy truck traffic & many accidents getting worse all the time....
  • Hyw 58 is "interesting", to say the least. I did it once towing a 28ft car hauler, and it was marginal. My buddy did it with a 48 ft fifth wheel car hauler and was pretty pissed at me for suggesting the route. Mind you tractor trailers take it so it's doable. It's basically switch-backs on a two lane road up the side of the mountain. 220 north to Roanoke is OK, I64 to I79 or I81 north are fine. (I64 right at I79 was a steep grade).

Where are you going to the north? I used to race at VIR at Danville a lot, I had a number of routes I would take, all basically starting and ending at Buffalo NY
