That's pretty much always been the case along the Alaska Highway for as long as I can remember. The reason the Canadians accepted US currency straight up was because of the exchange rates being in their favor. Try getting that deal when the exchange rates are in the US's favor. Those merchants along the highway know the difference, believe me!
