How to avoid FL Toll Roads

Been awhile that we have been to FL. and never Miami before.
Be on I75 from TN/GA. Heading By car to Miami Aitport Hilton.

What's is this Toll by Plate thing?
Used to paying cash as up north at toll booth.
Does FL. Still take cash on TWay?

Map program routes me from I75 to I10 to I95 than to Hilton.

Upon looking up FL. TW. Looks like I can stay on I75 all the way down.

Toll by plate includes an admin fee. Cheaper tolls with sunpass.

I just looked it up. You get a monthly bill for your tolls with a $2.50 administration fee. That's not bad. If you don't plan on returning to FL in the near future it's better than buying a transponder.
  • The Turnpike is either Sunpass and/or Cash all the way down to the Miami area. Once there they switch to that toll by plate which is no big deal. They just mail you a bill about a month later. You get a discount by using a Sunpass.

Miami and Orlando are the only two areas in the state with a lot of toll roads. There is one that I know of in the Tampa area but most RVers won't be driving it.
  • Many of the toll booths are now transponder or toll by plate, no cash. A stick on transponder is $5 and are for sale all over in FL. If you can pick one up, go online to register and put some cash on it, that's the way to. If not, toll by plate is the only other option.

I-75 will take you down the other side of the state and add to the miles. When you get near Ft Lauderdale and Miami, however you get there, the toll roads are your best bet. Unless of course you like sitting in traffic with a bunch of crazy drivers that learned to drive in another country.

Just my .02. Go to sunpass.com. They have a toll calculator, you put in your starting and ending points, number of axles and it will tell you what the total cost is. If toll by plate you'll have to add the that cost. Don't recall what it is , check the sunpass site.
  • Toll by plate just camera shoots your plate and sends you the bill. No big deal. :) It is the best way to get to the airport IMHO.

That is only for part of the system, in some parts you can still sit in line to pay "just like up north". Or you can get a transponder at one of the rest areas and pay online by credit card.

The turnpike looks like it is the shortest route. Using FL-40 between I-75 and I-95 will add about 26 miles and if I remember correctly is mostly 2 lane. The I-10 route appears to be the longest.
  • The only way I know of to avoid toll roads in parts of Florida, specifically the Orlando area, is to NOT GO NEAR IT.
  • Mainly interested in not getting caught in that Yoll by Plate crap.
No problem with pay as you go.
  • NOrmally I have found that you get what you pay for, and that toll roads are in better conditions than the other interstate roadways.

Especially in PA, where the toll roads sometimes follow the old rail tracks that where obsolete in 1950. They typically will follow a 2% or less grade, and are in great shape! I tried avoiding the toll roads, but found that they are faster, use less fuel, and not nearly as many pot holes.
