We travel with two weimaraners, one, from Mexico, is 85 pounds. Just be as courteous in Mexico as we hope you are at home-scoop, and remember that she is an ambassador, too.
Most of the flea meds, etc, are available in Mexico, and usually for less.
We learned the hard way, with lyme disease, that if your pet has any kind of issue, VISIT THE LOCAL VET!!! They are very aware of any local illnesses/diseases, and can take care of it. We have had very good experiences with the vets in Mexico, and most little towns have one. They are also very inexpensive.
Once, well south of Acapulco, one of ours developed a very red eye. We parked on the outside of a small town, got out with her, asked the guys sitting nearby where the vet was, walked there, and had it handled very well and cheaply.
Buses? Yes, absolutely! Since mine are large, I pay for them, too. Taxi? The driver won't stop if they don't want the dog. Do tip them for the extra service.
Years ago, it was difficult to find dog food, much less cat food. Now I can buy scoopable kitty litter anywhere! Animals still aren't always treated the way we would like them to be, but things are improving. There are certain areas, where even the locals scoop, and sterilize their pets.
A tip-one of ours eats anything, and one doesn't. We carry an unopened bottle of hydrogen peroxide in the moho for emergencies. It will clean them out like a white tornado if one eats something they shouldn't. Look it up. Otherwise, we just have the normal stuff we have at home with us.
