- I hope you are well... So sorry for all those folks and their families....
- RoyBExplorer IIWow - That getting close to home huh... How big was it...
Hang in there MEX...
Roy Ken - LwiddisExplorer IIPray for Mexico.
- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerThe folks who chose the site of Las Penas put it up far beyond the height of the tallest tsunami. A solid rock spine (promontory) sticking out into the Pacific ocean. Mexico City sits atop a quivering bowl of jello. Such a magnitude that would rattle our dishes here fells buildings in the capitol.
News reports have NOT A CLUE as to the toll of the quake. Ten million people live in areas that get cut off by broken roadways. Brick stacked upon brick shacks have collapsed. It's going to take five or more days to get a grip on the mortality toll. Other huge cities like Puebla are situated much closer to the epicenter but are not built atop a silt laden swamp.
Keep a reserved nature about believing fast news reports. They are typical B.S. assumptions.
If an agency issued a MODIFIED MERCALLI scale rating as to the quake, believe that. You can look up the scale on the internet.
A friend's sister lives in Polanco, a wealthy area. Hector said they are without power. Utilities are underground. - navegatorExplorerSat down to have lunch at my favorite restaurant around the corner and the quake hit, it started with mild shaking and then came the first jolt, and the shaking got stronger, it kept going and then a second stronger jot and harder shaking went on for a good 40 seconds or more, strongest I have felt in Mexico or California, even the 7.2 from Calexico did not feel this strong, we live in Ciudad Satelite so it is hard rock, sister in law has sisters that live in the shaky part of town, they stated that they could not get up from the chair and the furniture was dancing around, a lot of damage more than 100 deceased, still assessing damage, waiting for after shocks.
The house that the wife and I have is solid not even the knickknacks in the shelves moved, just the ground noise a very low rumble very faint as the waves came through.
I sincerely hope for the best and God bless all the poor that have lost so much with the hurricanes and quakes, I am to old to be of any help otherwise I would be out there helping rescuers, otherwise I will need the help.
navegator - qtla9111NomadThe city survived beautifully thanks to work done after 1985; retrofitting older buildings and new structure to earthquake code.
This could have been much worse. Coworkers and friends who live in Condessa and Roma are reporting regularly on Facebook. One friend had severe damage to his apartment and coworkers in a 20 story building all walked out unscathed.
There had been earthquake drills just hours before which obviously helped considerable.
17.000 buildings in the city and up to now only 40 that had collapsed. Survivors are being found.
Let's hope more good news continues to come out of this. Electricity is being restored but water lines may be an issue.
On the downside, robbers on motorcycles are going around the city. - mockturtleExplorer IILast I saw, 149 dead. :(
- mockturtleExplorer IIOver 200 dead. :(
- navegatorExplorerAs of 09:00 AM Mexico City time 229 dead and 50 buildings collapsed in Mexico City alone and hundreds damaged and an enormous amount of wounded persons, the hospitals and clinics are treating the less severe wounds in the patios and streets or parks.
The other States also have dead, I do not have a count or how much damage to the structures, it is going to take some days to appraise the magnitude of destruction once the authorities reach the small towns and villages in the outlying areas.
navegator - charlestonsouthExplorerNavegator -- The news here in the US is asking us to open up our wi-fi for use by families and friends here trying to get in touch with victims in and around Mexico City. Do you think that will work? Will it also work in Mexico after the disaster?
