The city survived beautifully thanks to work done after 1985; retrofitting older buildings and new structure to earthquake code.
This could have been much worse. Coworkers and friends who live in Condessa and Roma are reporting regularly on Facebook. One friend had severe damage to his apartment and coworkers in a 20 story building all walked out unscathed.
There had been earthquake drills just hours before which obviously helped considerable.
17.000 buildings in the city and up to now only 40 that had collapsed. Survivors are being found.
Let's hope more good news continues to come out of this. Electricity is being restored but water lines may be an issue.
On the downside, robbers on motorcycles are going around the city.
