Hwy 191 from Grand Tetons to I-40 in Arizona

Looking for advise on HWY 191. We will be pulling our 36 foot fifth wheel. Not only looking for how the road is but accessible Fuel stops as well as Accesible camp grounds.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • We just pulled it Southbound from West Yellowstone to Vernal at the end of June.

No problems. Overnighted at Green River, WY, so we could do Flaming Gorge in the daylight.

Like any mountain roads, control your speed downhill, relax, and enjoy some magnificent scenery.

The fires have gotten a lot worse since we left Yosemite to return to Florida, so checking with the various state DOT's is a real good idea.

  • If you're traveling now you might want to check this web site for fire activity in the states you'll be traveling. In Wyoming there's a fire on 191 at Bondurant and on 287 at Dubois. Plug in your other states, also. There's also a fire at the North Rim of Grand Canyon.

  • At Flaming Gorge, we like the Firefighter's campground on the top of the mountain south of Dutch John.
At Green River UT (not the WY one) there is a nice campground on the river in the town.
Down at Blanding, on the south side there is an rv park, neat and tidy, etc.

It has been a couple years, but when we drove 191 north from I40, there was a part of it that was very rough, but for the life of me, I can't recall if it was south or north of Chinle, AZ. But maybe it has been resurfaced by now.
  • We have driven that route many times over the years. It is mostly 2 lane. There always seems to be a few rough palces and some construction somewhere. If you are planning to use it soon, check for the status of fires in the area South of Grand Teton.

There are campgrounds in Pinedale, Boulder, Rock Springs and Green River in Wyoming. There is a Flying J in Rock Springs. There are a number of both public and commercial campgrounds around the Flaming Gorge Recreation Area.

There are campgrounds at Steinecker and Red Fleet State Parks North of Vernal, commercial campgrounds in Vernal and campgrounds in Dinosaur National Monument. I believe the Smith's in Vernal may have a fuel station or there is one very close by. There are a few campgrounds/rv parks near Price and Green River, UT.

Lots of RV parks and campgrounds in the Moab area. There are several campgrounds in the Blanding/Bluff area. There is a campground at Canyon De Chelly National Monument.
