Just to say: US 280 from Greenville to Denton was our preferred route for many years, but the the traffic from the Metraplex (Dallas - Fort Worth) has expanded all that way north. Now there are traffic lights every few miles, and the traffic patterns are entirely urban.
Some years ago, we found that US 82 through Gainsville and Sherman to Paris, Texas is a much more pleasant drive.
We live just 20 miles north of Longview on US 259 and often make several RV trips a year to Colorado--or through Colorado to other destinations.
EDIT to add: There is another possible route which, we think, is better than the US 280 route. That is to take US 69 from Bells, Texas (just east of Sherman) all the way down to I-20. That certainly avoids the worst of the traffic I have mentioned above.
