You are not alone - I love'd the drive the first time I took it - and couldn't wait to get back to do it again in my DP and Toad - DW loved it Too!

Roads like RT 12 are Why we RV.

There are no 18 percent grades (or sign stating such) and the hogback is whole 1/2 mile long. Some people make such a big deal about about highway 12 i just don't understand it.

I drove this road last April, the sign I referred to said 18 per cent grade steep curves next 4 miles. If you do not want to believe me, Frankly Scarlet...

I did not attempt to get off my bike and measure the grade but assume the state of Utah has better things to do than put up erroneous warning signs along their highways. :S

I wouldn't do it in a large RV. At one point the road was narrow, very narrow, no shoulder with huge vertical drops offs and then we round a corner and there is a warning sign:

You have to be kidding. I have been over it both ways numerous times. There is no 18% grades. Not that bad.

No, not kidding... Don't know how you could miss the sign if westbound, might want to pay more attention especially on that stretch of road. :E

We rode the bike out of Torrey last April up over the pass and stopped for breakfast at Boulder {the Devils Backbone Cafe which is excellent but I digress}. From there to the top of the grade is known as the Devil's backbone and about 20 minutes out of Boulder the sign I described is on the right shoulder and takes you down the 4 miles to Escalante State Park. No place for a large RV.

Sorry I did not stop and take a pic of the sign but I was more than a little busy keeping the bike on that narrow, spectacular road while my bride reveled in the views.

Don't think it's 18%. I think you're referring to the sign in this Google street view. But 14% is still a pretty decent grade.

Update. Thank you everyone. This is what we did and will do.
From Torrey to Bryce. Took hwy 24 to 62, 62 to 22 into Bryce. Hwy 22 is decent road but not many people on it.
I took a road trip yesterday on hwy 12, through Escalante to the top of the grade to the view point and seen the beautiful view. Talked to a couple people coming from Torrey. Confirmed the scary part of road. The road itself is new and nice driving from ever where I seen.
On way back to Torrey we will take hwy 12 to 89 to 24 into Torrey.
