Hwy. 70 from Graeagle to 99

Have to go to Seattle from Graeagle CA. the end of June. Short route to Hwy 99 is Hwy 70 to 99. Long way is Hwy 89 to Truckee then 80 to 99. Never been on 70 past Quincey. Delorme Street mapping shows a road I'm not sure I want to pull a 38 Ft 5th wheel over. 130 miles and an hour longer going the easy way.

Any opinions from those who drove 70 to Hwy. 99?
  • I know, but it doesnt mean i cant add the info. Its not the best way to get where they are going as it is.

And with more moisture on the way that whole area will continue to slide. Yes, it could be a while before I would safely want to drive the Canyon.

  • Just "drove" 70 from Graeagle to 99 on Google Earth. Only spot that caused me concern is the 14' 3" tunnel. If the other routes don't have tunnels I'll opt for one of those.
  • Were building a new house in Graeagle as soon as the weather breaks. I have driven from there to the north and back many times and i go 70, 89, 147, 36 to Mooney rd to 44 to 89 to I5
  • hwy 70 west, is not a fun drive, especially towing a 38 ft fiver. easiest way is take hwy 70 EAST out to hwy 395 at Hallelujah jct. go north to susanville. take hwy 36 west, then hwy 44 north.then hwy 89. 44/89 is a beautiful scenic route. It will bring you out near Mt Shasta at I 5.
BTW the McCloud campground just before you hit I 5, is a nice pleasant place.
  • When?

70 in Feather River Canyon currently closed due to flooding and slides. Will open in few days to a week.
  • My Reno uncle had a golf cabin in Graeagle so I've passed through there a couple of time.

CA89 the whole way to I5 is, I think the direct route without difficulties. It's corouted with 70 and 44 in places. And there are some short cut options around Lassen.

North of Quincy it follows a river valley, so there are curves but no real climbs.

One time I camped at L Almamor (in late May snow) and then down to Red bluff. But the second I took 147 along the east shore of the lake, and then Mooney Rd at Westwood north to CA44. That's a local road, but relatively straight and flat, cutting across the 36/44 angle.

I suppose in full disclosure I should say I left CA89 before I5 to cross the Lava Beds, and on to Klamath Falls (US97).

US395 is another option for going north to Oregon. I'm guessing most of the Reno vacation traffic takes 395 and 70.

In Oregon, US97 is a nice alternative to I5. It stays higher and dryer, with fewer cities.

CA89 south has a good grade south of Sierraville doesn't it? Truckee is quite a bit higher, with Donner pass an additional climb. But you probably are familiar with those. As long as you bypass Lassen, there aren't any comparable climbs heading north.

Or you could skip that climb and go south to Sierra City and take CA49 to central valley. :) Actually I had a pleasant time in Sierra City before opening season, and camping nearby (earlier in that May trip), but haven't driven 49 west.

Ca99 doesn't exist north of Red Bluff, does it? The through highway is I5. Old US99 is either a state or local route, often 2lane or city streets.
