Hwy 84 Pagosa Springs,Co to Santa Fe

Camping at Lake Vallecito,Co for the week. Considering taking hwy 160 east to Pagosa Springs, then south on hwy 84 to Santa Fe rather than driving back (west) to Durango and south on hwy 550. Is hwy 84 south to Santa Fe a good hwy for pulling a 30' RV? ( I know hwy 550 is a good hwy; but believe I can save time & distance if hwy 84 is a good highway.) Thank you for your advice. We are headed east on I-40 once we get out of the mountains.
  • The drive between Pagosa Springs and Chama is one of our favorites. Beautiful scenes.

Even though we did get hit from behind by a speeding pickup on one trip--just as we had crossed into New Mexico. We were doing about 60 mph, there was no other traffic, perfectly clear and beautiful day. Suddenly, I saw the rear view mirror filled with pickup passing, but not over enough, lifted us off the ground. I was able to recover by skillful steering (We were in a Buick Park Avenune, not an RV.)

Still we would recommend that route to Santa Fe. (Which is where we are today, and where we will celebrate Independance Day.)
  • That is the way we usually go. It is the fastest and shortest. There are a couple of old sections on US84 where the road is little rough and does not have shoulders. But, it is certainly more scenic. And I should also say that I am used to driving in the mountains. Otherwise, US550 is easier.
