You can see this highway on Google maps, there is an active slide area, but it is well maintained, and should not be a problem.

getcarter...you will be fine. 100%. Lots of Rv traffic, truck traffic, buses, sports cars, motorcycles head over that road every summer day. May? perfect..you beat the tourists. You will be challanged with folks behind you...use the pull-outs. There are lots of boondocking opportunities along the way if that is something you enjoy.
