Hwys. 89, 89A AZ

(24' class C, no toad, experienced mountain driver)

Has anyone driven the section of AZ Hwy. 89 between Wilhoit to south of Prescott? And, 89A to/from Jerome? I've read "The Mountain Directory" info; looking for comments from actual "I drove this" experiences. TIA.
  • All good info. Early through Jerome will make your life easier. It gets busy and there are a couple curbs that will require you to be left of center. Dead Horse is nice. There are a lot of things to see and do in the area.
  • Thanks for the tips! The plan is to leave the rig parked at a campsite in Deadhorse Ranch and rent a car to explore the area; hope Enterprise delivers! ;-)

Not really. When you go through town coming from Cottonwood, watch for the fire station. Instead of continuing on 89A which takes a hard left turn at the fire station, continue up the hill towards the Ghost Town and Gold Mine. There is a large parking lot on the left within easy walking distance of downtown Jerome.
  • Jerome you will find it hard to get a place to park.
  • I agree that that route is doable but you will find the streets of Jerome very tight. We love the Cottonwood area and as noted Dead Horse is very nice. :C
  • Thanks, 2gypsies! Already planning on Deadhorse! :)
  • With a 24' Class C you'll have no problems with either route. However, we would not attempt it with our 40' MH! You might want to plan driving through Jerome early morning before the tourists. Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood is a great campground.
