We will be leaving Deming, NM today heading to Florida. Microsoft Streets and Trips is suggesting leaving I-10 and going through Austin rather than staying on I-10 through San Antonio. Is that a bet...

Nope. I tried it both ways. Leaving I-10 is shorter than staying on I-10, but it leaves the expressway. That's what the OP saw.
