- dgalnExplorerJanuary in Texas can be dicey. I'm going to suggest US-290 from Houston to Junction; prettier country; just a tad shorter journey (1635 vs 1656 miles); good campground opportunities; good speed. About the only downside is a short toll road between Manor and Austin; Austin can be a bear (290 runs concurrently on I-35 for about 9 miles). This is just a suggestion. Mainly, check the weather forecast. Have a safe trip and enjoy our state.
- TexasShadowExplorer IIGood road. Possibility of sleet or snow between van horn and ft Stockton. Just watch weather forecast. 90 is also good from San Antonio.
- midnightsadieExplorer IIspent two days in tyee texas because of ice,
- mockturtleExplorer IIJust came off of I-10 and US90--both fine roads. Speed limit on I-10 is 80mph. On US90 it is 70-75 most of the way.
- DougEExplorerI10 is better than any of the more northernly routes. Once you get past Ozona in west Texas the only gas before El Paso is at Fort Stockton and Van Horn, so plan accordingly. If you tell folks about where you would spend the night they could help with campgrounds. (Ozona - 109 miles - Fort Stockton - 122 miles - Van Horn - 121 - El Paso).
- 4huskersExplorerI'd be more concerned about I10 in LA shaking your rig to pieces. Fuel at 1/2 tank and watch the weather. Campgrounds might dicey because of the oil boom; we saw a lot oil field activity between San Angelo and Ft. Stockton.
- BB_TXNomadThe basic answer is yes. But do check ahead for weather forecast. You will most likely have no problem, but there are occasional ice/snow storms that get into the hill country (west of San Antonio) and west TX. There have been rare occasions when I-10 has been temporarily closed in those areas due to ice. But never more than a day or so.
- edbehnkeExplorerjust watch the news. make sure you plan for your fuel stops as you go west.
as for safety? from what? sand and boredom. - bedellExplorerWe have done the trip west to east in January. Main problem was a wind and dust storm east of El Paso. It is just a really long drive. Plan ahead for fuel and places to stay - towns that get a dot on the map might not be much when you get there. We never had any concerns about safety at all. Happy Trails!
