Come to think of it, driving through at rush hour might not be such a bad idea. When traffic is lighter, the speeds are much higher. If you have to change lanes to stay on I-10, you might find it easier during rush hour as you'll have plenty of time to change lanes.
As a former Yankee, I have found Houston drivers to be very courteous. Just roll down your winder and wave to the drivers to let you in. This works quite well most times and is far easier at 20mph than 70.
