i-10 to Top Sail Toll or Not

Family and I are planning a trip to Top Sail near Destin this summer. We will be coming from Louisiana. In reviewing the maps I notice the Mid-Bay Bridge and connector is the fastest route to Destin from I-10. This brings me to the heart of the commercial area of Destin. The information I found is that is would cost me $13.50 to take these toll roads.

I fine the toll to be a little steep. My thinking is I could just continue down to US331 (NO TOLLS) hit US 98 just outside of town an backtrack a few miles. This appears to be a 15 minutes long with less traffic.

Thoughts and opinions?

  • Take US 331. Even though it is two lanes it is toll free. Taking FL 291 (Mid-Bay Bridge) dumps you right at Destin Commons, one of the most congested areas of Destin, and then you have to drive US 98 congestion to Topsail, less congestion vis US 331.
  • pros and cons of each. I lived across from Topsail for years and worked up near Freeport on 331. Traffic can become congested on Saturdays and Friday afternoons heading south on 331. Traffic on 98 is always bad in the summer though in both directions with a lot of traffic signals. I avoid 98 during the summer as much as I can. If it were me though I would agree with you and use 331 then west on 98 until 30A.
