I-20 Through Jackson, Mississippi

Anyone driven the east/west I-20 route through Jackson, Mississippi? How is the road towing a travel trailer/fifth wheel though Jackson? Thanks in advance.

  • DW & I went through Jackson a month ago on the Goldwing towing our pop up Aspen. At 55 MPH we bottomed out several times!

Darndest roller coaster ride I've ever been on!! Can't imagine doing it with the 5th wheel.
  • Have driven this route many times and never have liked it. I swear that I could tell I was going over that road even if I was riding in the back of a hearse.

Also want to add that Monroe, while better than either Shreveport or Jackson, is pretty bad itself.

I also suggest taking 220 around Shreveport, but even that is not a lot of fun.

Another issue is that as you approach Dallas, i.e. anywhere west of Shreveport, the traffic speed picks up. I like to travel in the 60-65 mph region, but feel I am walking at that speed once hitting Texas. The road has a 75 mph limit and most 4 wheelers try to exceed that, along with many 18 wheelers.

Now, I do have to say the best road I know about is !-20 between Vicksburg and Monroe. Flatter than a pancake, wide, and not excessive traffic. Plus pretty cheap gas right now.
  • Must be unstable soil bed or extra heavy truck travel through that area. West Memphis, Arkansas on I-40 is like that.
  • Jackson and Shreveport are two of the worst areas I've ever driven. I don't think they graded it before putting down the concrete or pavement. Having towed our trailer through both, I won't do it again.
  • Meant to add if you are traveling west and going through Shreveport, La you can expect the same roughness. I would suggest to take the I-220 bypass around Shreveport.
  • I agree, it is rough but get in middle lane, go as slow as is safe, and you'll make it. Happy travels.
  • It's been that way for 30 years for both I-20 and I-55. Strap everything down real well and go slow, avoid rush hours as the Jackson area is not large but traffic can be wicked at times.
  • It's fine as long as you don't drive over 20 mph, roughest interstate I've ever driven on.
