I've done both and much prefer 285. Lots of places to stop in Artesia, Roswell, and Carlsbad. Have done the Walmart free parking in both Carlsbad and Fort Stockton. If you're just passing thru, there's nothing better. We usually need to buy a loaf or a jug of milk anyway, so why not just park a little longer?....
Stop and see the caverns if you've never been -- it's well worth a couple hours.
