I 40 East Tennessee

Traveled the route today and no major backups. This is Sunday and maybe traffic was lighter. As previously stated, one lane over French Broad River both directions. Width is the restriction but no problem with camper.

The bridge over the French Broad River has only 1 lane open each direction and loads over 12'2" are not permitted. There is no problem with the height. This has close to another year of work scheduled. Of course rockslides can close I-40 at the state line area after any period of heavy rain.

I wondered about that "height" restriction but was unclear if they meant "height" or "width". It must be height since 12 feet plus is quite wide! Height restriction is the most serious concern and we will be leaving Gatlinburg tomorrow and need to decide which way to go. I hate to go through Pigeon Forge and 19 traffic lights. I prefer to go 321 to I 40 and then west which will take me through the Douglas Lake bridge construction.

I will be going that way a week Monday east out of Knoxville and south thru Asheville. I found a note on a DOT site that they were doing bridge work on I40 and there was a height restriction over a bridge (12.8) and a possible detour near Danderidge area. Anyone know for sure. Thanks

Construction projects often do disruptive activities on the weekend so as not to make Mon-Fri commuting a real nightmare. Here in Memphis at the I-40/240 flyover construction, they do things like moving lanes/concrete barriers on Sat or Sun when traffic volume is much lower.

With all the rain we have had this week I wouldn't be surprised if we don't have some landslides. That area of I-40 if very tricky. I would check with TDOT. lizzie

These will be the spots that can cause slowdowns, just depends on the amount of traffic when you go through there.

Came i40 from Asheville to Nashville last Sunday in a rental car . one spot around Knoxville I think was about a 1hour slow down. Traffic was moving but slow. Seems the problem is in both directions as they only have one lane open over a bridge. Other than that it was OK,but was Sunday,could be others during the week,although did not see a lot of other big const projects going on.

Dial 511 and see where that takes you.
its a national highway number used by most states not all but tenn and NC, SC are on it.
