I-40 winter weather

Winter weather also in Oklahoma along I-40, moving NE.

Last winter I spent the night in Tucumcari, NM along with everyone else on the interstate in the middle of the road when I40 was shut down. Snow and black ice and no road crews to salt, sand or plow . Everyone stopped and that was it ....from about 10 pm to 9 am.

I worked with a guy that went to college in Flagstaff. On winter weekends they'd pile into cars and head for Phoenix, rent a motel room, sit around the pool and drink beer. Flagstaff - 7,000 ft. ASL, Phoenix - 1,100 ft. ASL. Only 100 miles apart, but altitude has a major effect on the weather.

If you are going to take your RV on I40 during the winter make sure your propane tanks are full, extra blankets, extra food and water and a good book or two. IMHO even if the road is open but the road is bad park it till it gets better.

I-40 was closed at the end of April as we were trying to get through Albuquerque. We would not dare take that route in winter...

If it snows anywhere in the world, it snows in Flagstaff first.

And they are already talking about closing I-40 during inclement weather, but they are going to close I-40 East of the mountain, instead of West of the mountain, for East bound traffic, so be aware if you decide to travel this way.
