I-5 Northbound from Los Angeles to Paso Robles

Hello All,

I plan to drive northbound from LA on I-5 through the mountain pass headed toward Paso Robles. Looks like the highest point is 4K around Gorman. Is this a route that RVers usually take? Does anyone have experience using this route?

I am pulling a 40' fifth wheel with a Ram 3500 dually.

Thanks,
Mark
  • Great advice from everyone! Thank you so much for all the great input. Since we have time, I think we will take the 101. Should be a beautiful drive!

    Thanks again,
    Mark
  • We usually take I-5 to 126 to 101. Just an easier drive, less traffic. There is a grade on 101 south of Paso but far shorter than I-5/Grapevine.

I-5 is ok, but yes can get snow usually at night, early morning. Very rare during the afternoon. Highway 46 from I-5 to Paso is very good easy drive.

We drive from Phoenix to Paso once a year. Love the area, lots of great wineries and restaurants. Lately we've been avoiding most of the L.A. area entirely by taking I-15 to 395 and over thru Tehachapi to 99 and over to 5. It to can get snow in a bad storm but so far we've never had that happen.
  • Grapevine isn't all that bad now days. The lanes are much smoother than they used to be and there are more of them. Usually two right lanes are for trucks with the outside lane occasionally having a truck loaded going 5mph or so. I drive in the second lane as I can maintain a comfortable pace and regain speed if I have to slow down. Going down to the North to me seems much steeper than going down South, either way keep speed in check and it'll be over before you know it.

Were actually crossing it tomorrow, but in a Tacoma and not towing ;)

Keep a eye out for all the morons in their BMWs though darting across every lane!
  • As has been said, I5 through the Grapevine is nothing anymore. Hasn't been for 30 years. The only time there is a problem, is when it snows more than a quarter of an inch and they close it down. There is literally hundreds of highways in the U.S. that don't close down for stupid reasons like a quarter inch of snow that are used 12 months out of the year. Interstate 5 is just that- an interstate! Nothing more than a 6% grade anywhere. Long and straight. I can't even remember the last time I saw tire tracks in the emergency pullouts. You don't even hear big rigs even using their jake brakes anymore. And this route is WAY out of the way for Paso Robles. 101 is a straight shot.
