I switch back and forth just for a change of scenery when traveling to Sacramento to see friends. 99 has more places to stop and sightsee if your taking a leisurely drive. But going through more towns also means while traveling in the right lane you will have to deal with freeway entrance traffic on a regular basis. I-5 is just a long stretch with fewer onramps. Probably better just to take the I-5. Harris Ranch is the 1/2 way point, Harris as a sit down restaurant, or you can exit to the right for the fast foods. Fuel is usually expensive at that exit. If your not into the 380 mile drive from Sacramento to LA, the Almond Tree RV park (it now has a longer name) is a nice place to overnight, grass and wifi. CHP watches both roads closely, so if your towing keep it at the posted 55mph, you will find almost all of the trucks will stay below 60mph. Travel safe and Happy Trails.
