I-5 to Hwy 101 via CA 299

CA Hwy. 299 is used all time by RVers and truckers. No issues for me. Numerous posts on this stretch of road.

If memory serves, and it often doesn’t, we used that route last summer. There were a whole bunch of curves which really slowed us down, but other than that it was fine. Have a great trip!

I live in Eureka and pull my 34 ft Big Country over 299 all the time, it is no big deal. I have been over a lot worse. Just outside of Redding the worse part of the road in now the best part, figure about 3.5 hours if you go now stop. What are you coming to the North Coast for?

Pulled my 30 ft. Fifth wheel through there no problem but it take a long time.

Headed to Washington along the coast. I have crossed on OR 199 to Crescent City before and just wanted to check out a new route and check out the redwoods. We have plenty of time as we are bring the grand kids back home and wanted to avoid the I-5 route all the way up.

Be sure your exhaust brake works! Lots of 8 and 9% grades.

When I lived in Redding...…..we pulled our 5th wheel over 299 many times. It is a good road.

Moved to Roads and Routes forum from 5th wheels.

Good road. Just be aware that they have soil problems here and there, and so there is often construction and repair during the summer months. No big deal -- you may have to wait for a few minutes at each site.

There are no 8-9 % grades on 299, unless they added them in the last 6 months. Four hills to go over, 2 at about 4300 feet the other 2 lower.
worst case is 5-6 percent, watch the West side descent of Oregon Mountain it is a long grade at 6%.

Good road pull a trailer across all the time, 3 1/2 hours. If you have time stop at the Straw House in Junction City for lunch. Link
