I-57/I-64 in southern Illinois

I travelled up I-57 late October and construction was going on in the area where I-57 and I-64 merge for a few miles. The traffic was backed up for miles.

I will be travelling up to central IL this Friday and was wondering if anyone knew if they are through with that construction or if I need to plan a detour.

Thanks
  • Thanksgiving weekend.
IDOT has construction work shut down on high traffic weekends unless it's an emergency.
  • I just came through there yesterday.... No construction going on, all lanes were open... Now, was that due to the Thanksgiving holiday? Probably. Usually when we go through there it is a MESS, sometimes stop and go.

FYI - We were on I-64, we did not go south of the 64/57 split.
  • I think they've been working on that stretch for 4-5 years. About the time they get something done they tear up something else and make a bigger mess. A few days ago they had a sign on the north end of the southbound telling everyone the right lane was closed and to merge left. That really caused a mess with all of 57 and all of 64 trying to get into 1 lane. But then you got down there and the right lane was completely open. Then they told everyone to merge right because the left lane was closed. People stayed in the left lane until they got down to where the left lane really was closed and they had to stop to get into the right lane. They couldn't have screwed up any more had they intentionally tried.
Getting over on 37 probably wouldn't be any faster since it goes thru town. They pretty well got you.
  • Wow, either they have torn up even more roadway, or the the traffic is extra heavy cause of the holiday. It's been 3 months, now that I think about it, since I've been through there. Chemo has me a little out of sorts. :)
  • I was thru there 2 days ago both southbound and northbound. When I was going southbound we were stopped about as much as we were moving. It took 35 minutes to go from the north I-57/64 junction to the south 57/64 junction. When I came back going northbound speed was about 20 mph most of the way thru the construction.
  • The construction is still going on but flow seems much improved. It seems it was caused by 64 converging with 57 at a point where 57 had been reduced to one lane only. The last several times I was through there, the traffic flow was fine.
