I 65 Road Report-Northbound

Preparing to head back north next week. Can someone give me a road report for I-65 going north. Construction hangups etc.
We usually are going thru Birmingham, Nashville and then thru
Louisville heading north to Indianapolis via I-65 and then US 31 north to Michigan.
Any information will be appreciated.

  • I just came up thru I-75 from Fl. all the way to I -74 and then to 31. Nice and smooth all the way through. I used to take I-65 but with the traffic, construction and the roughness from Louisville to Indy it just wasn't worth all the banging and clanging.
  • Use google maps and ask for directions from where you are to Holland. It will then show all the construction on the entire route. This is something new. You can move/change the route if you wish and obtain the information for an alternative route. It will also show current accidents that are slowing traffic, although that doesn't help unless you check just prior to getting on such as after an overnight stay.
  • I-65 Northbound just North of downtown Birmingham - much construction for a new interchange at mm 264 thru mm 266, - yes, a BIG interchange. A lot of lane shifts and narrow lanes, and during the day occasional rolling road blocks. BUT, not too much of a delay unless there is a stalled car or wreck. Although Hwy 31 parallels I-65 at that point, I would stay on the interstate, grin and bear it. Try to come through Birmingham in the middle of the day or at night, not 7-9AM or 4-6PM

If you need more info than you get here, there are links to all of the state DOT websites at the top of the Roads and Routes page.

  • Lots of construction thru Nashville around the I-24 area. Loooong construction zone south of Louisville, not sure what they are doing but it's 2 lanes for miles. Also I-65 through Louisville is kind of a mess, they are re-doing the 65/64/71 interchange, but doesn't back up unless there's an accident. There's also some construction by I-465 south of Indy.
