When crossing Nebraska our preferred route is to get off I80 near Grand Island and pick up route 30 all the way to Ogallala. Since we are heading further north into WY, we pick up route 26 from Ogallala to I25. However, route 30 continues on west to the NE/WY border where it joins with I80.
We like route 30 because there are no trucks and no speeding cars or crazy drivers to contend with. Somewhat slower than the Interstate, but a much more relaxed drive.
We also have enjoyed a visit to the Golden Spike Tower at the rail yard in North Platte. This is the largest rail yard in the world and began in the 1860's as part of the first transcontinental railroad.
