I-75 north through Atlanta

I too used to live in Atlanta. AM750 is the key to getting anywhere. When they're talking about "The Connector", they're talking about the 4 mile section where I-85 and I-75 are merged and put through a big S curve underneath downtown. Talk about a poor highway design and a general pain in the ass.

I'd suggest going I-285 west that goes by the airport--unless you're coming through very early or very late (P.M.). If not peak hours, going straight through downtown is a breeze.

My rule of thumb is straight through except between 6:30a-10:30a and 4p-7:00p M-F

If I have to "go around" I always take the "east" loop of 285, even I am going on 75 North of ATL or 85 South of ATL. And take 675 as well

I also have a CB radio, which in my opinion is still an asset, especially on I75 between Macon and Atlanta, there always seems to be some sort of accident

So Grumpy, how did the trip go? Any problems in the Atlanta area?

If you are traveling to the panhandle area or Tampa area check out US27. It is a 4 lane highway all the way thru West Georgia. From Chattanooga to the Tallahassee area.

We vote for going through straight with a GPS that will tell you which lane to drive in. We have gone through around 30 times. Watch the time and day that you are driving through town. Sunday morning you can use cruise control. Between 10AM and 3 PM is usually good traffic. Watch the football and baseball events. The area South of Atlanta has become a problem The bypass comes back into I 75 with 3 lanes. Not easy few miles. You will have this issue whether you drive through or you take the bypass.

You did not say what you were driving, but it appears that you are not confident in you driving skills. My thoughts when driving is that I have as much right to the road as other drivers and I am entitled to my space. If some one is driving to slow, I pass them; if some one is taking up part of a second lane I move over. Going through Atlanta or any other big city is no different than any other road. In Atlanta they drive faster(even if the speed limit is 55 MPH), they will not keep a safe space between cars, and they will cut you off short. If you drive 55, you will most always have space in front of you to stop and make lane changes. By the way, I almost always go straight through in non-rush hours and stay out of the middle lane, watch for the exit only signs which gives you a heads up to prepare to change lanes.

My first and only experience (short of this Friday coming up) was that the lanes shifted and were narrower in some regions. I had my first TT three months before tacking it.

I do believe that non-rush hours times the straight through I-75 would be fine.

This has been a really interesting discussion. First I am not familiar with Atlanta and hate going thru there, however I was suprised that so many people use the 285 bypass.
For some reason I thought going straight thru was a lot better since you did not have to be involved with all the trucks. Now I am going to have to rethink this situation.

Hmm...I'm going to Florida next week, going the other way and staying at Perry (Cordele) as well. I wonder if we will cross paths?

We are headed down to Daytona for 4th of July week (leave June 29th) and will hit Atlanta mid-day so we don't get stuck on Monday morning traffic. We will be staying in Cordele area since there is a great little BBQ joint called Smokies - yum yum.

On the way home from Daytona, again via I-75 North and will drive to the North side of Atlanta on Sunday so we don't get hit with Monday morning traffic. A******shoot for sure but it's nothing I haven't done before. :)
