We have used the PA Turnpike in the past but got fed up with the high tolls. Our preferred route is I80 across PA to I76 at Youngstown to I71 south to Mansfield, then route 30 west to Fort Wayne. We continue on west from there, but you can take I65 north to I94 and on to Allegan.
We like this route because the only toll we pay is to cross the river at the Delaware Water Gap. Also, route 30 across OH and IN is all divided highway through farmland with few trucks. It's a pleasant relaxed drive but about 60 miles longer for you to get to Allegan.
BTW, we live just south of you in W. Long Branch and lived for 4 years back in the 70's in the tiny town of Alamo a few miles south of Allegan.
