I-81 Detour in Virginia

FYI VDOT is closing the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at MM 118 to MM 132 for an extensive repaving project. The detour is expected to last about 8 days. You may want to plan any travel plans accordingly.

  • The work on I-81 has been completed ahead of schedule and the northbound lanes are now open to all traffic. There will be some night time work remaining but the detour is done.

    I-81 detour is done

Now you only have to deal with the daily trailer tractor accidents.

yup that's my preferred route now since 95 is three lanes except for a stretch in S. Carolina. They have built so many distribution centers along the 81 corridor it is now bumper to bumper trucks often both lanes. Not much truck traffic on 95 until you hit Jacksonville. The third lane is truck free which helps pass slow "convoys",

    Good move.

I am hearing horror stories of the traffic backups of over two hours on US 460/11 that the detour follows . That stretch is 4 lane most of the way but it passes through a couple of small towns and it is not able to handle the volume of traffic that is on the interstate.

  • I have been booted off I81 so many times I seldom use it anymore. Mostly due to accidents and sometimes construction. The secondary roads are mostly two lane and very very slow.
