I have to drive the motorhome to Washington DC

I'm terrified. I've driven in multiple big cities, but hear Washington DC is really really bad. We are staying at Cherry Hill Park and are coming in from the south. What is the best time and route ...

Last time I drove around DC there was far more construction and narrow lanes on the west side than the east side, unless thinga have changed in the last couple of years. I would stay with the east side. Anyone have an update on the beltway construction?
