I would go south before going all the way to TN-111. You can look at Google maps at South South Pittsburg, make your choice. You should see light traffic on Suck Creek Rd. Signal Mnt Rd. will be moderate, but it's 6 lane and most traffic will be going the other way. Look at the traffic while your on Signal Mnt Rd, not far back to I-24. Traffic on 153 will be moderate, with lights north of the dam.
Murphy & Raceway on Signal Mnt Rd has just about the best diesel prices in Chattanooga.
ALDOT is paving on US-72 from east of Parnell Creek RV Park over the hill. Minor slowdowns both times I've been thru.
