Ice Strom in Southrn Ontario

Just wondering if any forum members are without power to their homes and living in their RV's with the generator going.

We are lucky and did not lose power but our RV is covered in l/2 inch of ice. With the cold temperatures we now have it does not look like it will thaw for a bit.
  • We lost power for about 10 minutes, all has been fine since.Son in Kitchener was without for several hours. He phoned to see if I had a generator yet so he could power up the heat lamp for their bearded dragon. Nothing about keeping the furnace on or the fridge cold , but keeping the lizard warm was top on the priority list. He borrowed my Canadian tire booster pack and inverter to run a 75 Watt heat lamp. Found out that the battery pack isn't as big as I thought it was, because it dropped the voltage to the alarm state on the inverter within 45 minutes. Guess it is good for boosting purposes only, not for use as a reasonable amount of back up power. Should have given him one of the batteries out of the camper that are sitting in the garage fully charged.
Hope the power is soon restored in Toronto. Not the way young ones should remember Christmas!!

  • We were lucky, only off for about 4 hours, just considering bugging out to MH for heat. House temps had dropped to about 14C /57F before power came back on. Periodic outages after that but stayed warm.
Two hospitals in Toronto and one in Newmarket on back up generators for 12-24hrs. Last report that I heard was there were still over a hundred thousand residences in Toronto with out power, crews from Manitoba and the U.S. were helping and hoping to have power restored by Dec 26.
On a sad note, 2 people died from CO poisoning, running generator in attached garage.

Everyone Be safe and have a Merry Christmas

  • The latest count on the news is five dead from CO poisoning due to generators in the garage and BBQ indoors.
  • We lost our power here for 5 minutes on Saturday, but after that no problem. Son who lives in Elmira lost their power for about 8 hours. In Toronto thousands without power today still. We are luicky as both of our families who live in Toronto have their power.
We are now on our way to Toronto to visit them.
  • Thankfully we have had no inturuptions in our power although we did get stuck at my parents for 24h due to road conditions. I did consider the possibility of moving over to the trailer as a bug out. My genny is portable and I have worked out how to power the furnace with it and if I'm lucky will still have enough left over to power the electronics in the gas range to be able to cook in the oven. If not its stove top only.
  • SIL has been out for 24 hours. They live on the moraine so can't even walk on or about the yard and drive way.
