Icefields tour

We are going to be heading up to Banff/Jasper next week and want to take the Icefields tour. Should we stop on the way up or drive back from Jasper? We will be in our 40ft motorhome and towing a car, if that makes any difference.

Also, what should we stop and see between the two?
  • Someone mentioned the campground south of the Icefields -- that would be Wilcox, and don't take a big rig in there!! Lots of big rigs spend the night in the Icefields parking area -- plenty of room. Plus, if you stay there, be sure to bundle up at night and get outside and look at the stars.

If you are feeling energetic, the hike to Wilcox Pass is fantastic -- you get a bird's eye view of the Icefields:

You can't drive to the outlook anymore - only buses and those with handicap permits can. It's about a 10-minute walk/hike from the parking lot, though worth it IMO. The parking lot can get very crowded, but you can have a look from the entrance before you commit to entering with your rig.
  • You will have no issues parking at Athabasca Falls either, tour buses pull in there.
  • The parking lot for the Icefields tour is huge. You'll have no problem parking or even staying overnight if they allow it. Have fun!
  • In Jasper we took the tram to the top of the mountain - in 2010 the early morning trips up included breakfast at the top - good food with killer views.
  • There is a NP campground near (south) the icefields parking lot. We spent the night there and took the FIRST tour of the day, it was a great idea.
  • We explored the ice-fields while driving by, and could have dry-camped in the parking lot across the highway. Instead, we drove to Jasper to the NPCG, and were disappointed with our campsite there. We wish that we would have stayed at the ice-field.

Do Icefields on the way up in case you run out of time. Also be sure to see Athabaska Falls south of Jasper.
With the exception of the Icefields check out parking before committing with your 40ft MH

  • Ice fields are far from both cities, 3 hours from Banaff and 1 1/2 hours from Jasper - Hence stop when you go by.
