What Mex said. No camping alone at the beach. Might not be really dangerous, depends on the state, but theft is prevalent everywhere. You go swimming, come back and find something missing. Though, locking everything up is a must, even in the middle of populated camp.
I don't think that you'll find anything cheaper than $5 and in many places you'll pay $10 or $15, with no hookups. Monthly rates can be cheaper than daily rates.
Propane... refrigerator propane costs about $US 25 or more a month, with cheap Mexican propane, and it will eat your 30 lb tank in less than 3 weeks, and refilling it is a BIG problem. Unlike in the US, there are very few places that do this. Furnace propane may cost $50 on a cold month. Unless you go really far South, it's cold in winter right after sunset.
Generator... Firstly, it's a noise - both your genny and your neighbors. Some morons bring diesel generators - you will know when they do. Expect to run your genny at least 2 hours a day, even if you don't use air conditioner. Another nice thing about genny is that it needs maintenance and sometimes stops working, so yo should be ready to both.
Ideally, you should try and find a camp with running cold water and hot showers, then you will use less propane and still have a reasonable comfort. Sewer hookups are non-existent in many places, especially if camp costs $5-10, so washrooms with running water, especially with hot water, are a blessing. Long-term campers are carrying portable waste tank so that they don't have to move their rig every few days (and use the camp washrooms for solids).
You will also find that in many nice and affordable camps there is no good space for you, because good spaces are taken permanently by expats, and people built fences around their rigs (that they could remove when removing the rig in spring), and put their generators outside the fence - so that they wouldn't hear it but you would.
