Insurance in Mexico

Hi,

We are planning to take our RV down to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) in Sonora, Mexico. This town is one hour drive from the border in Arizona.

I am looking at insurance and the cheapest I can get is $350 for the 10 days I will be there which seems a lot for driving there for effectively 2 hours (one there and one back).

Does anyone have any experience or advice on this?

Thanks,

Andy

  • lewis & lewis, they pay us labor rates. Hit a pedastal in los mochis last week & damaged my trailer. adjuster was there in 15 min.
  • We too have seen accidents in the RV park. A new entrant turns too sharp and creams the nose of a 5th wheel. Not having insurance while in the park is a big mistake.

  • Good that you thought about that. We have seen freak accidents happen to people who were in parks, and not moving, so didn't have coverage for what happened. If you aren't driving your moho in the US for a while, do you cancel the insurance???

If you don't have coverage, and you catch fire or are stolen,it's just like being in the US. If you aren't paying for coverage, you aren't covered.
  • Hi thanks. We will be towing a Jeep, I know we have to insure that separately. What about theft or fire coverage for the days in between driving?
  • Andy,

Just got back from Rocky Point over the Thanksgiving weekend. Are you planning to drive around while in Rocky Point? If not you might consider purchasing just for the day down and again for the day back. We spend the rest of our time in the RV Park so it saved some money. Also, if you aren't already aware the policy we got started at 12:00 noon Pacific Time so you may have to purchase for the day before or after depending on your scheduled arrival etc. We purchased ours on-line from Lewis & Lewis and have for the last several years.

    Hope this helps.

Check out this site, it is Lewis and Lewis. They are arguably the gold standard for Mexican insurance.

Something to consider: Do you need comp and collision, or are you willing to take a chance? Only you can make that decision.
  • You might want to check out "Vagabundos.com" in Rio Vista Calif. I use to be able to buy my mexican insurance from them before going into Mexico. I don't recall what the price was but they are very helpfull and even have caravans for groups to go into Baja.
  • You'll be on the road for two days. One coming and one going...

Lewis & Lewis has 45,000 dollar collision coverage for 2 days for 56 dollars

  • My advice is, check with your USA Insurance company, see if they will cover your comp and collision within the 75 mile mark, some do. If they do then simply buy the Liability only coverage for your stay in Mexico. It is super cheap and is required. If you email my friend Karen Padilla with Qualitas (very large company)she can send you a quote for whatever you need, she is a local and her adjusters work here and are on the spot quick. her email is penasco@qualitas.com.mx her number is prefix (01152)638 388-9700. She speaks English and is super nice to work with. Tell her Russ sent you!
