Insurance warning

Most Mexican insurance companies cap US labor rates at $75 an hour or even $38 a hour. While this may cover repairs in Mexico, if you damage your RV, you may have to take it to the US to get it fixed. Repairs on RV's can require skills beyond a normal vehicle bodyman. RV repair rates in the US are about $125 an hour.

Some research reveals that only 2 companies I can find have no ceiling on labor rates. They are Qualitus & HDI Seguros. If anbody knows of others, let us know. I found out about this when an acquaintence had an accident with his trailer and ran into the $75 an hour limitation. I will be ensuring my insurance next year will be either with Lewis & Lewis(Qualitus) or Mexadventure (HDI)
  • M.R. - We hadn't got down to any kind of reasonable discourse on the offer. It was out of line, which was VERY obvious. There is no way we could have replaced it and the equipment for what was offered. I'm not talking about a $1000 dollar difference. We weren't going to buy the replacement in Texas - our address is in Canada, so we expected less than what it would cost here, but not what they offered. We've dealt with insurance companies before and we know they are a bunch of thieving a++holes, but this was beyond that. As I said, making a "take it or leave it" offer and ceasing to communicate is not a normal business practice with anyone we would deal with again ! RYV
  • They will start low......you talk and talk....then involve a lawyer....take you r time and you will be closer than you think possible
  • As I stated! Choose whichever Broker that You want to work with. Then choose the coverage that provides the protection You feel will protect Your investment.
Then decide which Repair Rate suits Your particular situation.
Finally decide the Deductible that You are comfortable with!
Pay Your Money and Hope that You never need to make a claim!

I have heard Good and Bad things about Every Mexican Insurance Broker and Insurance Company. Most complaints were from people who did Not go in with the proper questions when purchasing their coverage!

The Good reports were from People who either had No Accidents or those who Paid for and received fair treatment ,based on the Claim and the Overall payout, which was based on their policy.

Like all things You get what You pay for!
  • M.R.-We live in Canada and travelling to Mexico, hiring a lawyer, and after spending MANY pesos, ending up in a courtroom where the insurance company owns the judge did not seem that prudent a decision, considering that the offer could have been reduced if not accepted. RYV
    - I think this is all I have to say on the subject, I don't need the stress to return ! Insure with whomever you like, we won't touch HDI again with a 10- foot pole.
  • Thanks Ron, I think I will use Qualitus in future. I did witness them dealing with a collision in Mazamitla 2 years ago, and apart from the fact the adjuster did not speak English (no problem Sal from Hacienda Contreras helped). They seemed very efficient. We should get together this summer. BTW, I sold my 04 Chev, got tired of replacing injectors (4 sets in 120K miles), I am not sure if I was having that issue when I saw you in PV. Bought a Dodge. i am sure they have their issues as well, but at least I can get a Cummins worked on down there. I will miss that ally Tranny.
  • I think Qualitas should be a good choice - no occasion yet (and don't want one !)to test them on a total loss, but that's where we went this last trip. I also looked up "comparables" online and printed a bunch of them out. I'll PM you our number - getting together sounds good - we have some cold ones ! RYV
