Down in southern BC ( West Kootenays) we had a very very mild winter. The snow pack was 85% less than normal. A lot of BC is already in a fire ban, and there are some big Forrest fires already in the PG area. The bush down here is tinder dry and it is still May, this doesn't happen until July August.
The creeks never got dirty with the spring run off, and the lakes are already lower than normal. This time of year they should be full from the run off, but they aren't. There are 8 hydro electric dams in a 30 mile stretch between Castlegar and Nelson on the Kootenays River none of them have water going through/ over the gates.
My lawn at home is already starting to burn, which usually doesn't happen until July August.
I fear this summer is going to be a really bad Forrest fire season, and a lot of BC will be burning.
Keep your fingers crossed that is doesn't happen.
Soup.
You can add WA to that. Gov has already declared a drought emergency. Snowpack is 16% of normal. After last summer's fires it will be even worse this year, and if it continues next year it will become critical. There is so much beetle killed timber in the Cascades just waiting for a spark. - sue_tExplorerMeanwhile, in Yukon high temperature records continue to fall. Much, much too hot here.
And in Texas there's flooding. Go figure.
Climate change? Where :B - profdant139Explorer IIMy mother just spent a week cruising the Inside Passage in sunny 70 degree weather, while we spent the same week in the Sierra Nevada of California in rainy 35 degree weather. Some meteorologists say this is the first El Nino event of 2015.
- Russell_CliftonExplorerI have been in the Fairbanks area the past week and it has been in the high 70's to 80's all week. Finally cooled down today. Very, very dry also. Campfires are banned in most parks.
