- magnusfideExplorer IIOur friends who requested the info reported back. I-20 is in great shape with only some rough patches for a short distance in AL and MS. The drive was essentially effortless. They had driven I-10 just a couple months ago and the area between Beaumont and Lake Charles was badly deteriorated. From reading reports, it's still in terrible shape.

Are you going through the D-FW area? If so, stay on I-20 and go south of both cities, DO NOT switch to I-30! Traffic is bad enough on I-20 in that area, but I-30 is far worse.
110 percent agree. - fanrgsExplorerAre you going through the D-FW area? If so, stay on I-20 and go south of both cities, DO NOT switch to I-30! Traffic is bad enough on I-20 in that area, but I-30 is far worse.
- WalabyExplorer III took I20 from GA to Texas this past December. Prior to that, it was quite some time since I made that trip. Roads in LA have greatly improved in my opinion. Either side of Shreveport still bumpy but not horrible. Shreveport Bypass had construction. I drove through Shreveport on way back (instead of bypass) and it wasn't too bad.
Mississippi was definitely the worse of the states on the trip, but manageable.
Never did I-10, so can't compare, but I thought 20 was just fine overall.
Mike - magnusfideExplorer IIThanks everyone. I'll tell them. They are on a deadline so US84 appears to not be an option.

but the section in Mississippi used to knock your teeth out. The section just east of the Texas line isn't much better.
We have made this route over the past 20 years almost as many times as the US 82/US 287 route to Amarillo (on our way to Colorado.)
Those two sections are indeed as described. Right through Jackson, the capital city, is the very worst in Mississippi. Slowing down is the only thing to do. And on either side of Shreveport the same thing is recommended. Though there is a good bypass route around north of Shreveport. Going east to west around Birmingham is one of the best bypass routes anywhere. There are good RV parks all though Mississippi.
My point is: these few rough spots should not deter from using I-20. For that matter there has been a lot of improvement on I-10 in recent years. I don't hesitate to use either one depending on my destination.
And I have used US 84 many time. Many miles of good surface across Mississippi. I agree that it is a good alternative depending on your destination. Just don't be in a hurry. - sdianel_-acct_cExplorerWe usually drop down and take US84 west. Farther and takes longer but we have plenty of time. Depends on where in TX you're headed. There are some US highways that will work unless you're in a hurry.
- AllworthExplorer IIWe haven't gone that way in a couple of years now, but the section in Mississippi used to knock your teeth out. The section just east of the Texas line isn't much better.
