Is Atlanta Open Yet?

We have been holed up near Chattanooga for two days waiting for Atlanta to clear. We are going to try to head south today. Anybody have a handle on what the conditions are like through Atlanta now?

  • The RV parks in SW Florida have not had much traffic in the past 3 days. Apparently, everyone is North of Atlanta and in a holding pattern. I would expect that there will be heavy RV traffic for the next week.
  • I guess should reply to my own question now. After watching the live newscasts and talking to a couple of people who had spoken with friends in Atlanta we decided to try it. We left Ringgold Georgia around 8:00 am, stopped to top up with fuel, and were going past the Atlanta Airport by 10:30. The interstate was in pretty good shape until around Marietta and then was stop and go until the 285 cut off. At that point most of the road was clear on the travelled portion but solid ice over the white lines. Here and there the left lane was icy. Tons of abandoned cars were still at the side of the road from there right through to south of the airport. Once we were south of the Marietta area travel was at about 10 mph below the limit, there were short icy spots, but through the core of Atlanta it was bare and dry and at the limit. It was more like a Sunday from that point on since the government offices and schools were all closed. So I would say that Atlanta is passable now but do be a little more careful than normal going through. I presume the warmer temperatures today improved things even more than when I went through.
  • How far south are you going? Many roads still closed in South Alabama and I-10 in Florida is closed from Pensacola to east of the Suwannee River (iced bridges). Wait another day and stay safe.
  • Wait one more day and the roads should be clear. Their temps will be above freezing long enough to melt. Last night they had a re-freeze that iced the roads again.
  • Look Here Supposed to warm up today. I'd go but I wouldn't go till after 10. Put you in Atlanta 12/1PM
    good luck
  • According to their online reports, I-75 is crowded as normal but moving slowly. Some icy conditions on I-20 Eastbound.
