From my observations, "gringo" is not an offensive word but not very polite either. At least, on Baja peninsula. It's more polite to call English-speaking foreigners "Americanos". Not all of us are "Americanos" though, but Mexicans don't know much about Canada and don't care to know, they are too busy trying to survive. A lot of them can't read or write and wouldn't know how to use a computer or internet, so don't expect them to be always "politically correct". To me it's more important "how" they are saying this word when talking about me in my presence.
