is I-75 still closed at Detroit? Alternatives?

Last year I know they closed I-75 near downtown Detroit for construction. Has it opened back up in either direction yet? I'll be traveling from Indy to a place north of Utica. Unfortunately I would be hitting the metro area close to suppertime. Debating the long way, I-69 to Imlay City and then south on M-53, but I hear I-69 is terribly rough west of Flint now. Any advice?
  • I-75 northbound is open. You will be fine taking that road as long as there isn't a broken down car, which can back up traffic. Northbound at rush hour will be fine until you get on the other side of down town Detroit. Then it will be slower going but manageable.

I275 going North at that time of the day isn't going to be any better. But it is a reasonable alternative then going through downtown Detroit. It's really 6 of one; half dozen of the other.

Coming home you will really want to consider a non-rush hour trip through the Detroit Metro area, going southbound through downtowns would be a real challenge from Utica/Ray Center area. I696 to I275 is most likely the better choice going southbound; although it will definitely be considerably more miles, it's probably 30 minutes better time wise at rush hour.

I'm not sure if it was a one time thing or not; but I696 westbound was closed in the Van Dyke area last time I was through there about 2 weeks ago. If it is still closed that will make the trip home a real fiasco. I94 in either direction through Detroit at rush hour is stop and go a lot of the time.
  • Yes, I was referring to Utica MI. To be more precise, we're headed to Ray Center, about 8 miles west of New Haven.

Google map suggests exiting I-69 at Fort Wayne and taking US-24 NE for shortest distance. Theoldwizard1, do you think I-94 through the center of town won't be bogged down too badly around 4 or 5 pm? How would it compare traffic-wise to looping around on 275 and 696? I hate having to hit the traffic peak, but sometimes life gets in the way of things.

    Thanks for the help, all!
  • Yup, still closed. Found out the hard way last weekend pulling the tt. Crossed border at Sarnia heading to Sandusky. Southbound I-75 lanes were closed and we got routed through city streets for about 1.5hrs. Things open up again just north of the Ohio border. Northbound I-75 lanes were open but not sure how far as we decided to cross at Windsor instead to go home. A section of the northbound lanes were routed over to the southbound side for a portion. Either way the traffic wasn't good and the roads were rough.
  • MI Interactive Driving Map

I live in the area and would take the following route

    From Indy, I-69 to I-94
    I-94 to I-75

I drove part of I-75 through the city and the north bound lanes were open. No matter which way you go, you are going to hit construction. Stay away during rush hour (6AM-9AM, 3PM-7PM)
  • I'm not sure where I-75 is closed but here are alternate routes:

I assume you're trying to get to Utica, Michigan (there are others) from Indianapolis.

I-69 to I-94 and from Ann Arbor take 23 north to 59 or....

14 to 275 to 24 towards Sylan Lake or I-75 at Madison Heights
  • Yep still closed. From Indy, you shouldn't hit it anyway.
