With all due respect, this incident would not happen in the United States or Canada.  Yes, you could have your vehicle stolen.  But you will not be stopped by roadblocks of armed bandits and then have to drive around for days looking for an authority to report the incident to.  
Over the years I have seen many "recovered" stolen vehicles. Generally the last thing you want is to have yours found. The thieves seldom preform routine maintenance or wash and wax them. They do have a habit of tearing them to pieces, however.
