We are leaving Zihua tomorrow morning. We are going the high road, as we had planned. We didn't plan on visiting PV this year. We have run Hwy 200 many many times since 1985, and enjoy it, but common sense says it wouldn't be wise to take right now.
We used to go the Zamora route, but now that we have taken the ring road around Morelia, and found it to be so easy and fast, we now do the following:
Head north from Zihua to the base of the toll road, and take it up to the ramp past Patzcuaro, then back track just a couple of miles and stay at El Pozo. It's nice, quiet, lots of space, and great for our dogs. We will then get back on the former toll road, and head to Morelia. As you enter town, there is good signage for the north ring road. It takes about 25 minutes to circle the city and get back on the road that heads to the cuota. You don't have to take laterals, and the right lane is a bit wider, and marked with a solid white line. First time through, we just followed a truck. At the end, you go down a ramp on the right, turn left, then in about 15 miles, you'll get on the cuota. From there, on to Guad, which now is down to just 2 stop lights on it's ring road.
We'll push on to Tepic, because in November, we timed it, and it's only 3 hours past the now very run down San Jose del Tajo park in Guad. It's a bit of a long day, but the park in Tepic is really nice. We still think you'd fit there. From there, short hop to Mazatlan.
The road from the cuota north of Guad takes off before Tepic, and it's a pretty drive, and not long. That's how we would do it.
Can you tell this is being written over lunch without a map or note in front of us?
Yes, we are on our way out, we've been in country since October.
