Juan Gabriel

Juan Gabriel died yesterday. He was one of Mexico's premier entertainers. Many did not know he had a home in San Carlos and was doing extensive remodeling. Neighbors say he was a good fellow.

  • The "divo" of Mexico. His music marked my life here in Mexico not to mention the fact that he was instrumental in my Spanish language learning. I also learned about culture through his music.

I am hoping that Mexico will announce a day of mourning for this icon. His cohort in music was Rocio Durcal. She was actually from Spain but fell in love with Mexico.

I remember driving from Mexico City to Queretaro when they announced her death.

They have left us their music and that is the most important.

    Thanks Moisheh for posting this.
  • Thanks for explaining who he was. I've seen several references.

We were blessed to have caught the end of the funeral at the Cathedral in Guadalajara of Don Pepe Martinez, long time music director of Mariachi Vargas.LINK His group played at the Mass and it was so very moving.
  • Here is a video of Juan when he was young. Yes there were hippies in Mexico too. The song is about life in the Frontera La Frontera Video (old)

Here is the same song done a few years ago in the studio, it is a fun song (he is a bit older in this video La Frontera video (newer)

I hope you enjoy them, as a person living in the Frontera of Northern Mexico I certainly do enjoy them.
  • Juan has an impressive history in music!

    He is truly an icon.

A Spanish singer by the name of Rocio Durcal performed who collectively made each other famous by a number of Juan's songs.
