The OP post has all signs of trolling - no useful info, just arguable statements fishing for response. The following is not to provide such a response, but merely to show that my POV is not emotions-driven.
Mexico is a big place, and it depends where you are. Overall, theft is more a problem than in the US. Robbery - depends where you are, and yes, in some areas of the US I would not walk or would not stop my car either.
As a side-note - coming from wilderness kayaking background, it's funny to read suggestions to stick to beaten track. Of all Mexico I only know Baja, and the safest places were those without any town or road access nearby.
