What is the best route?

Been a long time since visiting St Thomas and St Johns. We used to visit a different Carib Island area every year on vacation. Jamaica, Antigua, Guadalupe, etc. Easy trips from Florida, but we don't travel out of the US anymore. Our last two overseas vacations were to Ireland/England and Australia. Slowing down on travel now.
We have friends who live in the hilly suburbs of Hartford we visit now and then. I was in Conn just minutes from the school the night before the horrible shooting. Left my hotel early in the morning before it happened. I kinda avoid 84 now unless I take it to/from 684 during off peak traffic hours. 87/287/78 has become my preferred route lately with 78/33/209 an alternative. 81/75 used to be the way I would head south but now I tend to cross over to 95 near Richmond. 81 truck traffic seems to get worse every year. Like you I do like some of the back roads thru SC and Ga. Sometimes stay at a tiny little RV park at Wrens, Ga just SW of Columbia and Augusta. The US1 and 441 thru central Ga. Cotton fields, tobacco and onion farms and pine forests. A few small towns but light traffic.
